Matthew was chosen to take part in our 'Watch This Space 2' exhibition by Patrick Burgoyne, editor of Creative Review magazine.
I first saw Matthew’s work when he entered our Creative Futures competition in 2006. I was on the panel of judges and Matthew’s work stood out immediately among the other entries, most of which were rather ‘samey’, utilising similar techniques and approaches. There is a faux naïve style of illustration which is popular at the moment - wonky felt tip portraits, slightly skew-wif drawings of objects - but Matthew’s drawings, while every bit as modern, buck this trend.
Matthew’s work is very carefully and beautifully rendered. The drawings are quite ‘crafty’ in feel and somewhat old-fashioned stylistically but with a very modern sensibility. He draws on styles we might associate with old engravings but his approach is very humourous and of-the-moment. There is an often quite bizarre, almost grotesque, edge to it; a man licks a girl’s elbow; an old, pipe-smoking woman crawls on all fours towards a grinning monkey. It’s funny, but also rather disturbing.
Now, Matthew is going from strength to strength, producing work for Volkswagen, Virgin Atlantic, the Economist and other high-profile clients. I’m sure he will continue to impress with his charming and refreshingly off-kilter work."
