I had loads of fun putting this show together and couldn’t resist the indulgence of choosing an artist myself. It was a difficult choice, since there are so many brilliantly talented illustrators out there - the mind boggles, but mine was made up pretty quickly after first reading about Sam Weber’s work on Drawn! and then in the AOI’s fabulous Varoom magazine (www.varoom-mag.com).
Sam’s work, deftly combining digital and traditional methods to great effect, is astonishingly powerful. His images have a kind of epic solemnity, really serious and grave – they look like they’ve been there for a thousand years! And that makes it even more startling, when you learn that Sam only completed his studies in 2005. For an artist so early on in his career, he has an extraordinarily well-developed personal style, complete with his own unique iconography.
I really love Sam Weber’s work – his illustrations on the page have a tremendous impact and even more so, I think, on the wall!"
