Tim was chosen to take part in our 'Watch This Space' exhibition by The Society of Illustrators.

When I was approached to help choose artists for this exhibition and first heard about The Illustration Gallery, I thought we should nominate very forward-thinking, beat-of-the-moment type artists to fit into what the space is all about.

One wouldn’t immediately think of Tim Bower in this way, as his style is ostensibly quite traditional but I think, in fact, that he fits exactly. He’s a splendid artist and also a great thinker – as serious an illustrator as you would find working in the US today.

Tim is extremely prolific – his output is huge – and yet each job is exceedingly well thought through. The final image may seem simple to the casual viewer but numerous sketches go into each one until both the concept and the image are just right. He works on each detail with great attention, until completely happy that each wrist, hand etc. are just right and fit together to make a satisfying whole. This seems to me the sign of a serious artist, especially as he enjoys the process so much – it’s in his blood!

Tim isn’t alone in working like this but few young illustrators today work with such care and professionalism. He’s also very modern in his approach, embracing new ideas and technologies, having his finger very much on the pulse, which is important, as an illustrator who can’t ‘move with the times’ will have a very short career! Tim has this adaptability."
