I knew Tomer would become a really great illustrator when I taught him History of Illustration at the School of Visual Arts.

I can understand that many young artists today might feel that art history has little to say to them, but Tomer was very attentive, always wondering how the history of illustration could add to his very contemporary vision.
This is a good thing, I think – illustrators today can learn much from classic American illustrators such as N.C. Wyeth and Howard Pyle.

Tomer has taken the best aspects from this strong tradition of illustration and worked them into his unique style – flat, bright color and clear, crisp linework. He is a tremendous draftsman, having a natural ability to construct arresting compositions – and boy, can he can really draw people!
This flatness of color and precision of line does not constrain him, as his characters, especially, have an extraordinary life to them. Just like us they fight, make
love, can be vicious and snarling or tender and still.

Tomer has a real passion for image making and never tires of drawing. Even when the market sucked a few years ago – and it really did! – he created work for himself, setting up a small publishing enterprise, Meathaus, with a group of other New York artists. People really took notice of him but I think that even if they hadn’t – clients or not – Tomer would still have kept on, with personal projects to keep
him sitting in front of that blank piece of paper, creating new images.
It’s this passion which makes him a really fantastic illustrator."
